2008-09 Schedule
The Doctoring IV Clinical Elective, 2008-9
Course Coordinator: Mary Jo Kelly 734-0879, mary.kelly@ucdmc.ucdavis.edu
Objectives: in Doctoring Four, students will
- develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes to be effective teachers
- practice their teaching clinical skills in various small group formats including teaching clinical reasoning, physical examination, ethics, epidemiology and behavioral sciences.
- understand the theoretical background behind various aspects of education including approach to adult learning, essentials of giving feedback, preparation of teach materials, writing of cases and the use of standardized patients.
- to play a more active role in mentoring more junior students
- understand issues of professional development including issues of managing power, responsibility and team work
Specific activities required for credit:
- Students will be assigned as a small group co-facilitator in one of three primary teaching settings—small groups in Doctoring 1, 2 or 3. For this, you would be expected to attend ALL session except when you are on vacation or away rotations. You may miss no more than 25% of your assigned teaching sessions in core groups to receive course credit.
- You will need to total 70 teaching hours. This includes your above Doctoring group hours. Since the hours of the core small groups differ, students will need other teaching hours besides their core group. They may facilitate other teaching sessions such as AMP, Year 2 physical diagnosis, Year 2 clinical performance exam, tutoring, anatomy lab, or year 1-2 lectures. You can also serve as a fill in facilitator for other missing Doctoring faculty in doc 1, 2 or 3. You could also participate in ongoing course evaluation, feedback or design processes. Research opportunities are also available (e.g. evaluate an ongoing program, assess outcomes, etc.). You will develop your schedule with Dr. Stevenson during the summer. You will need to communicate with the attendings and directors of your electives to ensure that they are aware of the need for you to miss several afternoons per month.
For 2008-9, if you attended all small group sessions, your core course would net you:
Doc 1: 60 hours
Doc 2: 48 hours
Doc 3: 70 hours
So most students, esp. Doc 1/2 assignees, will need to teach in other activities. Sign up for AMP, clinical exams, etc early so you do not get in a crunch at the end of the year. See the schedule attached.
- You will attend a monthly evening seminar that focuses on practical and theoretical issues of teaching and learning (designed for MS4 students only, 10 hours total). 75% attendance is required for course credit.
Hours/Credit:
- The total hours for this course consist of 70 hours of direct teaching and 12 hours of evening seminar time. You will receive two weeks of approved academic credit counting towards your fourth year hour’s requirement. Unlike other electives, the hours will not be taken in a single block, but will accumulate its required hours over the entire fourth year. This will free two weeks for you as a block elsewhere.
- A passing grade and elective credit requires that you successfully meet your hours commitments as outlined above There is no exam or paper required. Course credit is issued at the end of Winter quarter to allow some students to take Spring quarter off, while still fulfilling their teaching commitment.
- Keep Mary Jo Kelly constantly informed about your schedule changes. She also needs to know each time you miss a core doctoring group.
What if I am still on required third year clerkships when I am schedule to teach small groups, i.e. Doc 3 in May?
The students in your clerkship would have been released to do doctoring anyway, so whether you go as a student or as a group facilitator will not be an issue.
What if my away rotations, AIs, or interview time make me miss more than 25% of the seminars or teaching session, or fall under 70 total hours?
If you communicate with your UCD supervisors, they will generally let you attend your afternoons Doc group sessions. However, if you plan to spend more than two months away from UCD on externships next year, then this elective will not work out for you. Several students have returned to teach while on externships at UCSF or in the East Bay. If, despite best intentions, you still miss more than 25% of sessions or seminars, you would need to add an additional teaching activity to make up the time. If you fall just short of an hours requirement, we will find additional teaching or tutoring time to make up the difference. Keep us informed!
Welcome to the course!
